Aug 30, 2014 – Update on Monet

In Rosie’s honor, I’ve (with the help of Lisa Murphy) kept this page going and done all I can to make this a page that embodies her legacy of rescue, hope and love. That hasn’t been an easy thing to do but I think we’ve accomplished it for the most part. I hope today’s post doesn’t set us back.

I don’t post a lot about Monet and it isn’t because she’s unloved. I adore her but there are issues I’ve been reluctant to make public until now.

Monet’s rescuer sent her to me with assurances that Monet had received full medical care, that the “stiffness on her right side” is not treatable and that she has a loving personality. You can bet I was shocked when the dog who arrived in CA on July 4 had an open oral/nasal fistula, an abscessed foot, and an explosive temperament.

Hoping the fistula would require only a minor surgery, and assuming her vet care had indeed been thorough, I’ve been trying all sorts of things to help Monet while trying to figure out how the $2,100 dollars raised for her medical and ongoing care had actually been spent since it couldn’t have been spent on her. I consulted a dog trainer who directed me to a massage therapist who after nearly losing a finger suggested Monet needed tranquilizers and then finally I consulted an animal communicator. Don’t laugh…she actually got me on the right track by telling me that Monet liked the attention and loving “…until it hurts…” This made me sick because in my gut, I felt something was really off about Monet but couldn’t put my finger on just what that was. I reviewed the limited vet history and after some very pushy emails from me to her rescuer, I found that Monet had received only the most basic of care and that the money raised for Monet (and only Monet) was diverted to other bills.

Last Friday, in frustration and anger, I posted this information on my personal FB page and Annie Hart from Rescue from the Hart responded with an offer to cover the cost of Monet seeing her vet – someone who specializes in tough cases. Annie’s vet, Dr. Ash had the answer in minutes…Monet has class 3 luxating patellas in both hind legs – her little knees are shot!!! She is, and has been, in chronic PAIN!!! Her back is arched and possibly permanent damaged – not from an untreatable stiffness – but because her legs don’t work properly and it throws her spine out of alignment. I’d be grouchy too if I was in that much pain every day. Since she has never had a thorough exam, Annie also covered a full blood panel and a urinalysis. We’ll have those results back soon.

While we wait for her test results, Monet is taking antibiotics to clear up the inflammation at the fistula’s site. With the medication, it may heal on its own. She is on Metacam for a few days so we can determine if the pain is truly the source of her personality problems. She is doing so much better on the pain meds I think I can yell bingo already! Oh…and since she’s been here with me, she has gained over a pound!!! You can see in today’s photo that she looks a bit rounder in the middle and far less stressed. The discoloration on her throat is from her blood work.

I have purposely not mentioned Monet’s original rescuer because I want to keep this page positive AND because I want to focus on the good rescues who provide thorough vet care like Marley’s Mutts does for Scrat and like Rescue from the Hart is providing for Monet Annie is helping Monet take the step – literally – into a new life.

If you want to help Monet you can help her via this page: https://www.facebook.com/RescueFromTheHart

If you donated to Monet’s original fundraiser please email me at cinnamon.muhlbauer @ gmail . com

You can also support both of these rescue’s work and Rosie’s legacy by sharing Marley’s and Annie’s FB pages with your friends. You can always, absolutely always support Scrat and Monet with good thoughts, prayers and virtual hugs.

Please be well and be at peace.

Cinnamon
